CONT'D...
LARRY
O’BRIEN
Larry
O’Brien, who
launched
Calian
Technology
Ltd. as a
one-man
consulting
firm in
1982, now
sits at the
head of a
leading
international
technology
services
company as
chairman and
chief
executive
officer.
Active all
his life, he
admits that,
at 57, he
has to make
a conscious
effort to
eat
healthier,
choosing
salads over
hotdogs and
foregoing
alcohol at
barbecues
and evening
events that
are part and
parcel of
campaigning.
Now he eats
a bowl of
bran flakes,
yogurt and
fruit for
breakfast
and prefers
home-cooked
to processed
meals.
Following a
spinal cord
infection a
couple of
years ago,
which slowed
him down,
O’Brien has
picked up
the pace
over the
past year
and hired
personal
trainer
Trish Hill
of Studio
One Fitness
to keep him
in shape.
“I call her
the Princess
of Pain,”
O’Brien
laughs. “She
takes me
over the
edge.” On
days when
he’s not
training,
he’ll run
along the
canal. “You
have to be
fit to live
up to the
rigours of
the
campaign.
I’ve lost 15
lbs. I’m
getting
trim. And I
spend so
much time
walking
around the
city, I may
lose a few
more.”
BARKLEY
POLLOCK
The youngest
mayoralty
candidate is
27-year-old
Barkley
Pollock, who
works as a
cook at a
drop-in
centre and
keeps fit by
lifting
weights at
the YMCA.
“I’ve been
lifting
weights
since just
before my
16th
birthday,”
says
Pollock,
“but you
wouldn’t
know it. I’m
nearly 5’11”
and weigh
less than
150 lbs.”
Pollock
admits he’s
lost a
little too
much weight,
nearly 20
lbs over the
past three
months, but
he
emphasizes
the need to
exercise to
help him
sleep. “I
also do
pushups most
nights and
some deep
knee bends.
If you don’t
work out,
you can
really feel
the
difference
walking up
stairs. I
also walk
everywhere
and don’t
even own a
car.”
Says
Pollock, who
lives
downtown, “I
walk to
work, the
main library
and even as
far as the
Byward
Market and
the Rideau
Centre on a
regular
basis.” He
confesses,
however,
that he’s
not the
healthiest
eater. “I
eat a lot of
meat, red
meat for
dinner and
chicken for
lunch.”
JANE
SCHARF
A former
customs
officer,
childcare
worker,
community
developer
and social
worker, Jane
Scharf says
she
maintains
her
emotional
and
spiritual
health by
attending to
the needs of
her family
and friends.
“I do a
tremendous
amount of
social
action in
the
community in
areas such
as
homelessness,
anti-globalization,
Haitian
action, and
the fight
against
security
certificates.
I believe
one can
fight city
hall. I
have, and I
have won
many
battles.
This not
only helps
empower
those I
support, it
also
empowers me.
My life is
stimulating
and
rewarding.”
When it
comes to her
physical
fitness,
Scharf
stretches
daily, walks
her dog
twice a day
and performs
a dance
routine
three times
a week. She
admits that
while she is
overweight,
she has lost
more than
120 lbs on a
high
protein, low
carbohydrate
diet and has
maintained
that weight
loss for
more than
four years.
